There is a common misconception about the
Scope's Trial that the society perceives it as. The reason for this misconception is because of the popular 1960's movie,
Inherit The Wind.
Inherit The Wind
was a movie that attempted re-enact the Scope's Trial of 1925. The movie had some truth in it, but most of it was
propaganda and demoted
Christianity.
Inherit The Wind
did not give an accurate view of the Scope's Trial and it certainly degraded the Christian faith.
The movie perceives the trial as something that was really going on in the town. Now, the trial really was going on in the town, but the movie plays it off like the towns people and the courts have no idea that what is going on is a big setup. The actual purpose of the Scopes trial was to put the city of
Dayton on the map as a popular American city. The whole thing was fake and most everybody in the town new that the town and the people just wanted a lot of hooplala around the town so it would get publicity.
While in the city, the were many Christian and Evolutionary protests going on. Signs were everywhere that supported both types of life styles. Many fairs and rallies were held in order to bring the media and the public over to the city. The trial was successful in this aspect of it's purpose. For this very reason, it is valid to say that the Scopes trial can also be called a "show trial".
Inherit The Wind
, for the most part, was made from a very Naturalistic or Pro-Darwinian Evolutionary point of view. There are many one liners in the movie that refer to the Evolutionary Theory as being true and creation being a fantasy. The movie is very Anti-Christian and makes many references that degrade the lifestyle of Christianity. It makes Christians look like fools and insane people. It perceives Christians as being non-loving toward non-believers and very narrow minded toward new ideas which does have some truth to it.
The overall point of
Inherit The Wind
is almost entirely completely inaccurate. It makes the Scopes trial to look like a real event when in reality it was all really just a setup. The bias it has against Christianity is completely ridiculous and shows it's true worldview colors. This movie as a whole does not have very much truth to, but most of the culture has accepted it to be true because they do not know the truth about the Scopes trial. The only way one would know that this movie is false facts is if they researched the trial and did their homework about it.
